and making the sad scene
and singing low songs and having inspirations
and walking around
looking at everything
and smelling flowers
and goosing statues
and even thinking
and kissing people and
making babies and wearing pants
and waving hats and
dancing
and going swimming in rivers
on picnics
in the middle of the summer
and just generally
'living it up'
Yes
but then right in the middle of it
comes the smiling

My debit cards are, evidently, made in Outer Mongolia, on a machine that only works on days when it can be powered by the divine light of the full moon. It is then shipped by camel to Uttar Pradesh, where it's lost for six days. When, finally, one of the child workers in that factory amputates a finger on a diamond drill, it turns out, in quest for the first-aid kit (which is actually just a gun to shoot the kid with) that my debit card was being used to hold a door open. Acting promptly, the factory foreman grabs my card, uses it to slit the kid's throat, and then drops the bloodstained card into an envelope, which is probably addressed to Maine. The UPPS drops the envelope into the hold of a tramp steamer going the wrong direction, and eventually the card winds up in Africa, where I see it being used as a ping-pong paddle in the slums of Nairobi on Another Touching Discovery Documentary About Somewhere You Never Want To Live. The producer of the show is only available via carrier pigeon during the day, but can be reached by a pillar of fire at night, so eventually he takes the card from the kids playing ping-pong and sends it off to me, where it will be, for NO EVIDENT REASON, rerouted to Des Moines, IA, because Des Moines, WA is close enough, despite the zip code being wildly different. Eventually, the card will be hand-carried to me by a convicted serial killer named Opus, who is pretty sure I gots a purdy mouf.

On the plus side, I never, ever notice the bloodstains from the kid in Uttar Pradesh, because by the time I have time to examine the card, I've had to use it to kill Opus, so I assume it's his blood.

(And for all of you who laughed, there's plenty of room for the lot of you in Heather's Happy Hellbound Handbasket.)

:: From [info]zevshir, this gem of an April Fools' joke:

This is too funny.
The PA Wing website (www.pawingcap.com) has been updated for April Fool's Day. Here's a sample:

Notice of Proposed Regulation
Wednesday, 01 Apr 2009, by JColgan

Part 2, Section 972 (a) 1 (c)

No CAP member, or person or persons acting on the direction or suggestion or supervision of a CAP member, may try, or attempt to try, or make attempt to try to comprehend or understand any or all, in whole or in part, of the herin mentioned Regulation, except as authorized by the National Commander or an agent appointed by, or inspected by the National Commander.

Section II
If a CAP member or any group of members becomes aware of or realizes, or detects, or discovers, finds that he/she, or they are understanding or have been beginning to understand the Regulations, they must immediately, within three (3) days, notify, in writing, in triplicate, the National Legal Officer using CAPF 129a, Notice of Impending Comprehension.

Section III
Upon receipt of the above-mentioned notice of impending comprehension, the National Legal Officer shall immediately rewrite the Regulation that is in imminent danger of being understood. Such rewriting shall be done in such a manner to eliminate any further hazard of comprehension.

:: From Fizzy via Gtalk, Shaken but not stirred by stadium-rock spirituality (from theage.com.au):

Christian pop, ’80s power anthems, Metallica meets Cheap Trick. A mosh pit for Jesus was jumping with teenagers in rapture and a balcony of Planetkids went off for Christ. Music blared from the stadium sound system while the screen seduced us with slick videos edited so fast the phrase ‘‘subliminal image" kept popping into my head. Lyrics flashed up: "Come like a flood and saturate me now." I wondered what Freud would have made of the disproportionate use of such words as ‘‘come’’, ‘‘touch’’ and ‘‘feel’’, and the phrases "move within me" and "being filled". My favourite was "King of Glory, enter in".

and

A pastor banged on about sacrifice and said it wasn’t important how much we sacrificed just as long as we gave as much as we could. No matter how small it was. I didn’t know what he was on about until the giving cards came round. And a little bucket for coins. No lid with a slot. A big open bucket, so you could be shamed by your paltry donation.

Then there were the plugs for the Mighty Men’s night and Beautiful Women Seminar. Male volunteers were encouraged to get involved with the ladies’ seminar with the promise of ‘‘being able to tell 3000 women what to do’’. Beautiful women. Mighty men. Note: not mighty women and beautiful men.

"The Wounding Moment"
Chris Ransick

Don't try to tell me now
we were otherwise kind to the girl.
Such lies mock both the truth and
what we've become since with our
accumulated years. I know I will walk
backward through nightmares forever,
trying but unable to catch her tears
in my outstretched palm.
When you tormented her that day
at the woods' edge, summer sky
stormed because your words
curdled clouds. Yes, she was fat,
and her skin raw with blemishes.
I flinched when she raised her head,
red-rimmed eyes fierce, and learned
from her how to speak none of it.
I was, as always, captive in my
little-brotherness to you, my captain,
but I disowned you there with the
sunlight glinting off your blond hair,
all your beauty still somehow less
than her anger, sheathed.

:: From [info]quirkybird, a lovely poem called "Woe".

Woe!

It is true, our tribe is similar to the bees,
It gathers honey of wisdom, carries it, stores it in honeycombs.
I am able to roam for hours
Through the labyrinth of the main library, floor to floor.
But yesterday, looking for the words of masters and prophets,
I wandered into high regions
That are visited by practically no one.
I would open a book and could decipher nothing.
For letters faded and disappeared from the pages.
Woe! I exclaimed-so it comes to this?
Where are you, venerable ones, with your beards and wigs,
Your nights spent by a candle, griefs of your wives?
So a message saving the world is silenced forever?
At your home it was the day of making preserves.
And your dog, sleeping by the fire, would wake up,
Yawn, and look at you, as if knowing.
