:: From the above link, The Millennial Generation. Been saying this for like two years now--we're gonna pass stuff like marriage equality because more and more progressives keep turning 18 and registering to vote! (from americanprogress.org):
One likely consequence of the Millennial generation’s rise is an end to the so-called culture wars that have marked American politics for the last several decades. Acrimonious disputes about family and religious values, feminism, gay rights, and race have frequently crippled progressives’ ability to make their case to the average American. Millennials support gay marriage, take race and gender equality as givens, are tolerant of religious and family diversity, have an open and positive attitude toward immigration, and generally display little interest in fighting over the divisive social issues of the past. Almost two-thirds agree that religious faith should focus more on promoting tolerance, social justice, and peace in society, and less on opposing abortion or gay rights.

Right. The fuck. ON.

This analysis seems to spring from these two sentences:

For example — for example, some have suggested that the public option go into effect only in those markets where insurance companies are not providing affordable policies. Others have proposed a co-op or another non-profit entity to administer the plan. These are all constructive ideas worth exploring.

So, two sentences placating the GOP’s and Blue Dogs’ macaroni art constitutes a repudiation of the public option?

I totally support the church's right to say who may or may not be married within its tradition. HOWEVER, this joyful religious ceremony should have NO standing under U.S. law, any more than baptism has. In this country, Church and State are separate.

Let adults wishing to legally share their resources and responsibilities with their adult cohabitants go down to City Hall and file a contract specifying the details of their arrangement. The number and sex of the signers and which (if any) of them are sharing a bed should be NO business of the State's.

:: The comments on [info]olberfanns leading up to Keith's anticlimactic "big announcment" are fucking great.
:: Yeah, so I've linked to or copied just about every poem that [info]exceptindreams has posted that I've seen in keeping up with my flist. Well, they deserve to be linked/copied. Here's another, Listen! by Vladimir Mayakovsky.
:: From a comment thread in [info]atheist, 10 myths -- and 10 truths -- about atheism by Sam Harris. A really, really excellent article. Go read it! (from latimes.com)
:: This from [info]metaquotes:

My debit cards are, evidently, made in Outer Mongolia, on a machine that only works on days when it can be powered by the divine light of the full moon. It is then shipped by camel to Uttar Pradesh, where it's lost for six days. When, finally, one of the child workers in that factory amputates a finger on a diamond drill, it turns out, in quest for the first-aid kit (which is actually just a gun to shoot the kid with) that my debit card was being used to hold a door open. Acting promptly, the factory foreman grabs my card, uses it to slit the kid's throat, and then drops the bloodstained card into an envelope, which is probably addressed to Maine. The UPPS drops the envelope into the hold of a tramp steamer going the wrong direction, and eventually the card winds up in Africa, where I see it being used as a ping-pong paddle in the slums of Nairobi on Another Touching Discovery Documentary About Somewhere You Never Want To Live. The producer of the show is only available via carrier pigeon during the day, but can be reached by a pillar of fire at night, so eventually he takes the card from the kids playing ping-pong and sends it off to me, where it will be, for NO EVIDENT REASON, rerouted to Des Moines, IA, because Des Moines, WA is close enough, despite the zip code being wildly different. Eventually, the card will be hand-carried to me by a convicted serial killer named Opus, who is pretty sure I gots a purdy mouf.

On the plus side, I never, ever notice the bloodstains from the kid in Uttar Pradesh, because by the time I have time to examine the card, I've had to use it to kill Opus, so I assume it's his blood.

(And for all of you who laughed, there's plenty of room for the lot of you in Heather's Happy Hellbound Handbasket.)

On that topic, it occurs to me that Easter is truly the original holiday of the Living Dead (one of the originals, anyways-- I'm sure there are older mythologies too). So remember, kids, leave out a nice basket of brains for Jesus so he won't come after yours!

:: From [info]quirkybird, a lovely poem called "Woe".

Woe!

It is true, our tribe is similar to the bees,
It gathers honey of wisdom, carries it, stores it in honeycombs.
I am able to roam for hours
Through the labyrinth of the main library, floor to floor.
But yesterday, looking for the words of masters and prophets,
I wandered into high regions
That are visited by practically no one.
I would open a book and could decipher nothing.
For letters faded and disappeared from the pages.
Woe! I exclaimed-so it comes to this?
Where are you, venerable ones, with your beards and wigs,
Your nights spent by a candle, griefs of your wives?
So a message saving the world is silenced forever?
At your home it was the day of making preserves.
And your dog, sleeping by the fire, would wake up,
Yawn, and look at you, as if knowing.

Czeslaw Milosz
