HOWEVER, this joyful religious ceremony should have NO standing under U.S. law, any more than baptism has. In this country, Church and State are separate.

Let adults wishing to legally share their resources and responsibilities with their adult cohabitants go down to City Hall and file a contract specifying the details of their arrangement. The number and sex of the signers and which (if any) of them are sharing a bed should be NO business of the State's.
