Signing up for the Three Weeks Of Dreamwidth fest w00t!

Tentatively, the start date for the fest is Monday, April 26.

Just to make sure it is clear, anything that you choose to create and offer for this festival is with the understanding that it be posted only on Dreamwidth for three weeks from the date you post it, with the intent of stimulating conversation and connection here at home. After three weeks, you may post the content anywhere you wish.
[...]
There will be at least one friending meme. We will be using one main comm to link things, and emphasizing posting to existing comms. We will be including both fannish and non fannish content. There will be totally awesome memes in private journals.

Sounds like fun to me!

I have INVITES, if anyone would like one!

Cross-posted to [community profile] heathermacicons, [community profile] heatherslibrary, [community profile] sidetrackedery, [community profile] good_news_week, [community profile] accessworld, and [community profile] whole_books. :)

:: From [info]zevshir, Under the Hood: Oleo Strut History

The coffeehouse was given the name "The Oleo Strut." An oleo strut is a shock absorber, and we saw this as a metaphor for what we hoped the place would be for the soldiers we hoped to work with. We had no idea what a shock we were about to absorb.

Within a week of opening, soldiers were coming in at night to tell us of riot control training they were taking part in during the day. They'd been told they were going to Chicago to "fight the hippies and the commies" who were going to show up for the Democratic Convention the next month. They were terribly upset at the thought of having to possibly open fire on Americans who they agreed with about the war and the need for change here in America. Soldiers were talking about deserting, about running away to Mexico, about "doing something."

Our response was a little yellow sticker, two inches by two inches. On it was a white hand flashing the "peace sign," backed by a black fist. We printed up 1,000 of them and passed them out. GIs said they would put these on their helmets if they were called into the streets, to identify themselves to the protestors. At this point, the Army got very upset with us.

The Monday of the convention, 5,000 troops were ordered to board the transports. They were headed for the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, as backup for the Chicago Police Department. As the soldiers were preparing to board the airplanes, the bravest act of antiwar protest I ever knew of happened.

43 Black soldiers, all combat veterans, refused to board the airplanes. Due to the self-separation of the races on the base, we had no idea this was going to happen. The Black troops had organized themselves. They knew what they were going to get for this. The minimum qualification to be one of those who would refuse was the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, so the Army wouldn't be able to call them cowards.

The parade was part of a "Blonde Weekend" which also featured a blonde golf tournament, a little lady fashion show, an evening ball, and a children's drawing competition.

"It's a great time to spend in the parade and contribute to a charity," said Ieva, one blonde spectator.

"Finally something different, something positive because I'm tired of hearing about the crisis," said another, 70-year-old Ausma.

The event attracted many locals and puzzled tourists.

Following the parade, blondes climbed into open-topped cars and drove to the local shopping centre.

The money collected during the event will be donated to support children's safety and playgrounds for disabled children in Riga and across Latvia.

:: Re Day of Silence, Carl Joseph Walker, and bullying:

If you read most of the blogs in my Blogroll, then you are most likely already aware of the Day of Silence. You are likely aware of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoove hanging himself at the age of 11. You might have seen his picture. If not. look into the face of battered innocence.

The antibullying action taken to protect this child was to force him to eat lunch with his abuser. That is as effective as the silence I faced when I was Burned at the Stake. His family is supporting the Day of Silence, as he was going to turn 12 this Friday. The Day of Silence is April 17th.

I look back at my life and see how close I came to suicide as well. I wanted to die so often, but I wasn’t able to make myself or someone stopped me. No one considered the ramifications for this boy. His death is criminal. Suicide? In a way it is murder. Every child who ridiculed him is guilty. They may be children but I honestly hope that they feel the guilt, that it eats at them enough to prevent the next act of bullying. I doubt it. The excuse that Children Are Cruel is not acceptable. No, children are not cruel. They are innocent. They are taught cruelty by the adults in their lives.

What would you do if you had the money?

I'd buy my husband's army contract, and the contracts of any of his friends that also wanted to come home.

And/or flying around the country/around the world helping with sandbagging ahead of floods, or helping out after wildfires, that sort of thing.

What would you do if you had more confidence?

Wear sleeveless shirts outside my home.

What different choices would you have made in your life if you had known x?

All of the sudden, even though you have some place where you can put your stuff, that idea of home is gone. You'll see when you move out, it just sort of happens one day and it's just gone. And you can never get it back. It's like you get homesick for a place that doesn't exist. I mean, it's like this rite of passage, you know. You won't have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start. It's like a cycle or something. I miss the idea of it. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place."

From the movie Garden State

:: ganked from [info]marlykins:

Relationships don't work the way they do on television and in the movies: Will they, won't they, and then they finally do and they're happy forever -- gimme a break. Nine out of ten of them end because they weren't right for each other to begin with, and half the ones that get married get divorced, anyway. And I'm telling you right now, through all this stuff, I have not become a cynic, I haven't. Yes, I do happen to believe that love is mainly about pushing chocolate-covered candies and, you know, in some cultures, a chicken. You can call me a sucker, I don't care, 'cause I do... believe in it. Bottom line... is the couples that are truly right for each other wade through the same crap as everybody else, but, the big difference is, they don't let it take 'em down. One of those two people will stand up and fight for that relationship every time, if it's right, and they're real lucky, one of them will say something.

-- Dr. Cox, [Scrubs], episode 1.15 "My Bed, Banter, & Beyond"

:: quote from [info]sdmrks10's LJ:

Well, if it makes your friend fell any better, I didn't think I could live through the 1st Bush administration after he wasn't officially elected and all... but I did. Then I was certain that no one would re elect a war mongering President who took away our freedoms and made us less safe, but they did, and I cried, BUT I survived. Stupid, useless John Kerry...

The stimulus. It is not an unnecessary occupation of another stable (albeit tyrannical country.) It is not war. It is most likely not going to kill any Americans. It is not the Patriot Act. It is not a document taking away anyone's rights to habeas corpus. It is not violating our or another country's human rights. So, from where I sit, while it is not the bill I would like to see, it is worth a try and it holds proper perspective in comparison.

The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

3.http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4.Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together and post the result as a comment in this post. Also, pass it along in your own journal because it's more amusing that way.

This is why I'm not all that fussed about being so far behind in my flist, even with all the, you know, fussing. o.O

(I've been saving this stuff for the past few days. It doesn't look like much but just one of these is worth being a month behind for.)

Some of these are locked. If they're from [info]rahmbamarama, all you have to do is join to see 'em.
